-periodic-meltdowns- said: Hello! Tis the season for book recs! My neice is in 1st grade, loves to read, loves science and astronomy and geography. Are there any lady scientist books for her age?
Ok - so - first off when people think of women scientists they think Marie Curie and Jane Goodall so I avoided them because they’re awesome but your niece will find them anyway so why not show her some other awesome lady scientists?
Rachel Carson and Her Book that Changed the World. Rachel is the awesome environmentalist who wrote Silent Spring which some say started the environmental movement.
Hedy Lamarr and a Secret Communication System. Hedy Lamarr was just a hollywood starlet to pay the bills. She really wanted to be a scientist inventor! If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have wireless technology today.
Girls Think of Everythingmight be a bit old for her but I love love LOVE it. It’s all about the best inventions women make.
Mae Jemison is an astronaut and just an all around kick-ass lady. Women have been up to see the stars!
If your niece likes fiction how about checking out some Magic School Bus? Miss Frizzle is still the best.
If she wants something more about what she’s passionate about, I adore DK’s nonfiction. It is always on point.
This collection of Hubble Telescope Pictures will keep her inspired for years and years to come.
Nonfiction isn’t my strong suit so if none of these seem like just the right thing let me know and I will come back with another list of possibilities!
Ooh! Ooh! “The Comet Sweeper,” By Carol Brock, about Caroline Herschel, 18th century British astronomer -
